Research

Our lab has previously identified two mitochondrial proteins involved in eye development PDSW (NADH Dehydrogenase) and CoVa (cytochrome-c oxidase Va) present in Complex I and Complex IV of the eukaryotic mitochondria respectively (Owusu-Ansah et al. 2008 and Mandal et al. 2005). To further characterize the functional roles of these proteins and the pathways in which they are involved, we carried out a genetic screen in the Drosophila eye using RNAi lines for PDSW and CoVa. Our screen was conducted by crossing the RNAi lines against 1200 piggybac lines, 260 VDRC RNAi lines, and 200 EP (Expression P) lines and we have identified 30 candidate genes as genetic interactors. We will be concentrating on further characterizing the candidate genes in order to elucidate their functional interaction with PDSW and CoVa.
