Honors Collegium 70AL: Gene Discovery Laboratory

The National Science Foundation continues to fund and support both the HC70A and HC70AL courses after the Howard Hughes Medical Institute undergraduate teaching grant funded and supported both courses from 2003 to 2006. These two courses specifically targets non-science majors and teaches them about science. HC70A course introduces scientific concepts in a classroom setting, through lectures, articles and in class demonstrations. HC70AL course invites students from the HC70A course to apply the techniques learned in the class to a real life experience. HC70AL is an intensive laboratory experience for non-science majors. This course is designed to complement the HC70A course by applying the experiments discussed in the classroom to the laboratory. The objective is to introduce experiments in a real life research experience under the guidance and direction of the teaching assistants and the professor. The students will have an opportunity to study and analyze a gene, which has not been studied previous to the class. The students are also responsible for writing an essay, recording and analyzing data in a lab notebook and a final oral presentation.
