Undergraduates who study plant biology can major in a number of
disciplines. The Department of Molecular
Cell and Developmental Biology has a major that concentrates on
the molecular aspects of life (see Pamela
Hurley in LS 2316 for details) whereas the Department of Organismic
Biology, Ecology, and Evolution (OBEE), has a more broadly-based approach
to the life sciences (see Nancy
Purtill LS 2312 for more information about this major).
In addition, students can pursue studies in plant biology within the
OBEE Major by majoring in Plant
Biology. The goal of the major is to prepare students for
postgraduate programs in plant biology, including environmental
biology, ecology, agricultural sciences, and plant molecular,
developmental and cellular biology. Students can select key courses
to obtain a sound, broad foundation in plant biology, learning
state-of-the-art techniques. They are also given the opportunity
to participate in individual supervised research projects using
plants as experimental organisms.
