UCLA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS -- In 1936, the first two alumni merit scholarships were awarded - for 0 each. Since then, the Association's scholarship efforts have become a tradition, involving thousands of volunteers across the state conferring awards for eight merit-based programs. Recently, more than 750 alumni reviewed more than 4,000 applications from prospective, transfer and continuing UCLA students. Some 500 students received awards totaling 0,000 in financial assistance. Becoming an Alumni Scholar requires more than just academic excellence. Successful candidates must have demonstrated leadership in extracurricular school activities, community activities, employment or personal situations. Individual interviews also help identify eventual recipients. Association committees also evaluate how a student has managed difficult life challenges. Whether taking care of younger siblings or taking community college courses that supplement a limited high school curriculum, we believe such resourcefulness contributes to UCLA's richness and diversity. Once identified, all recipients are awarded honorariums. Afterward, the Association evaluates individual need, awarding additional grants to offset student loans or work-study. Alumni scholarships are one of the few UCLA financial aid programs that take both merit and need into account. For more information, see http://www.alumni.ucla.edu.
