About MCDB 199
Special Studies Directed Research in the Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology


Students must


  • be majors in either MCD Biology or another life science department. MCDB majors may enroll in MCDB 199 with sponsorship from MCDB faculty or pre-approved outside faculty (see Sponsors Must). Students from other life science majors may enroll in MCDB 199 only for research projects in the labs of MCDB faculty, but must also have prior approval of their major. Transfer students may not enroll during their first quarter at UCLA.
  • MCDB majors must have successfully completed MCDB 104 and at least one other MCDB required upper division course.
  • have senior standing, or junior standing with 3.0 GPA or above in the major.
  • agree to read and follow all guidelines detailed on this web site under MCDB 199. For any questions, consult the MCDB Student Affairs Office (LS 2128 ).
  • not be working for pay in the sponsor's lab at the same time they are enrolled for academic credit in MCDB 199 courses.
  • Students may not enroll in a 199 course if they have outstanding Incompletes in a previous MCDB research course.
  • MCDB 199 projects are limited to four units. Only one quarter of 199 may be counted on the MCDB major.

Other life, physical, and medical science departments offer 199's also; however, MCDB majors are required to enroll in MCDB 199 for credit toward the major, regardless of the sponsor's department, unless otherwise approved in advance. Petitioning must be done before enrolling in another department's 199 course. See the MCDB Student Affairs Office if you need more details.
